Kenya Methodist University has well equipped libraries and a strong library staff component consisting of professional librarians a number of whom are at master’s level. The library collection has a section with books and journals on information science. The library is a member of the Kenya libraries and information service consortium through with library users can access e-journals in the PERT project. The university is in the process of getting a license that will allow the use of e-books.
The university has well equipped computer laboratories, adequate infrastructure through KENET ( Kenya Education Network) and modern personal computes and laptops

Information Communication Technology

The university has put in place an electronic networking infrastructure that provides the level of connectivity and data throughput needed  by both students and staff for the purposes of research, teaching and learning. It also provides the right development and infrastructure for management of information throughout the institution by applying modern approaches as availed by the new technology.

Rationale of the Programme

The BSIS programme is centered on information and recognizes information as an important force that makes significant contribution to the society. Further specific details identify information as making particular contribution to the academic process or learning, study and research; various business activities and operations, as well as all other aspects of development. This contribution of information has been cited by various policies both at local and international levels for example by Vision 2030 and the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The millennium development goals for example, incorporate an information component that has the following functions inter alia; promoting strategic thinking at country level, encouraging and promoting diversity; the sharing and exchange of experience and facilitating of  building of partnerships between developed and developing countries and among targeted individuals within the country.

The United Nations World summit of Information Society (WSIS) looks at information as providing an environment where everyone can create, access, utilize and share information and knowledge enabling individuals, communities and people to achieve their full potential in promoting sustainable development and improving the quality of life.

In Kenya, as in other parts of the world, the provision of timely and accurate information has become an important management function in decision making, preparation of action plans and control activities. Organizations are faced with accelerating rates of change, a more complex environment and increasing uncertainty. Managers and executives in general therefore require good information in order to be successful in competitive world markets. Furthermore, current reality indicates that access to up-to-date information through online retrieval systems enhances the emerging digital firm in E-governance, E-commerce, E-business and others through the use of internet technology.

In line with the vision and mission of the university, and according to the above rationale, the programme will have an impact on the society in Kenya and beyond through its provision of knowledge-based skills that will enhance the use of information in development.
The Bachelor of Science in information science adopts a holistic approach that is designed to meet the market demand in training information specialists who will be equipped with knowledge and skills to manage libraries, records and archive institutions, information centers and information resources in a changing environment that is fast embracing the use of information technology. This will be realized through the study of university core courses, departmental core courses and inter disciplinary courses.

Departmental Objectives
To achieve the programme objectives, the department of information science will strive to attract quality students, to recruit, retain qualified and experienced faculty and staff, to provide relevant and objective academic courses and to create an attractive academic atmosphere in a friendly Christian setting in line with KeMU’s vision and mission.

The programme is designed to meet the challenges and need of students who are preparing to become truly effective in the local, regional and global markets. The programme is also structured to provide a wide scope of knowledge in the broad professional areas while allowing specialized training. The planning of the programme has in particular been guided by a strategy aimed at addressing the challenges posed by contemporary developments on the information scene including initiatives in information technology and others.

Programme Expected Outcomes

Upon completing of the Bachelor of Science in information science degree programme, the students should be able to;

  1. Critically manage various types of information in libraries, information centers and other information institutions and organizations
  2. Apply the use of information communication technologies (ICT) in handling information
  3. Build on acquired components progress to higher levels of study in their fields of specialization.
  4. Construct and develop an awareness strategy for the need of dissemination and transfer of information in all sectors  of economy and development

The programme is expected to attract applicants from the following groups of people;

  1. Secondary school leavers who have the minimum qualifications to start a career in information technology
  2. Practitioners who need to upgrade their skill to enhance performance in information managements in libraries and information centers
  3. Students in any discipline who wish to advance their career in information management in libraries and information centers
  4. Information managers and entrepreneurs in business
